Culloden Moor, was scene of the last pitched battle in Britain, is one of the most iconic and emotive sites in Scotland. The battle took place at the end of the Jacobite Rebellion which was led by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 as he tried to reclaim the throne for his father the Old Pretender.

At Culloden a retreating Jacobite army was caught by the Duke of Cumberland’s English army. Here they had a boggy and marshland area which suited the Government troops more, they had also left there supplies behind in Inverness which did not help there preparations.

After a failed attempt to surprise the English army at Nairn, there two army’s engaged in battle and the superior armed (and numbered, almost 2:1 in the English favour) and supplied English army slaughtered the Jacobites.

Bonnie Prince Charlie escaped to France but the effects of the battle were felt for many years afterwards with Tartan and Kilts and anyone whom had supported the Jacobites were severely punished
