The Great Glen Way covers a total of 73 miles and it starts in Fort William and ends in Inverness. It usually takes walkers around five days to complete this walk and the path is signposted along the route by the Great Glen way thistle logo. It was only opened in 2002 but it has quickly become on of the most popular walks in Scotland.
There are many highlights along the route from enjoying the magnificent scenery to various popular visitor attractions. At the start of the route in Fort William you can catch a glimpse of the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis.
Then there is the Caledonian canal which runs from Fort William in to Fort Augustus before terminating into Loch Ness. You get the chance to see Loch Ness and even visit the visitor centre in Drumnadrochit. There are also two other loch along the path, Loch Lochy and Loch Onich.
At the end of the route you arrive in the capitol and the only city in the Highlands, Inverness. Here you will have a completely different experience from the previous towns as suddenly there are a large selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. |
