| A stone castle was built on this picturesque site around the early 13th century. During the time of the wars of independence the castle was garrisoned by the English in 1296 but liberated a year later, it was then recaptured in 1303 and then again taken back by Robert the Bruce in 1306.
The castle endured many years of war throughout its years, but it was not the English that were the threat, it was the MacDonald clan. There were yearly attacks from 1437 onwards until the castle was taken in 1452 only for the crown to retake control 4 years later.
Finally the castle was destroyed by departing troops during the Jabobite risings in 1689, this was to deny the advancing army any advantage. The castle remains in ruins to this day, but you are able to explore and bask in the magnificent location of Urquhart.
